Ngataringa is the Maori name of the stretch of water between the headlands of Bayswater and Stanley Point in the Auckland Harbour.There is a haunting beauty when this seascape and headlands are seen on a calm moonlit night, and this serenity is evoked in the opening nocturne.

By contrast the lively triple-time scherzo brings to mind festive harbourside events such as the recent millennial firework display over Auckland, the 'City of Sails'.
