Studies in Folk Music from Bosnia and Herzegovina  AI SI 014
for solo Bass Oboe (or Bassoon)
Clive Strutt

This piece was composed in 1995 for the multi-talented musician, Derek Bell. Mr. Bell, as well as being the harpist for the celebrated Irish group, The Chieftains, is an expert on all the harps, pedal and Celtic, and all the oboe family of instruments (see separate composer biography under Derek Bell's compositions). Mr. Bell, who travels the world constantly as a performer, was looking for a piece to present the bass oboe in recitals where no accompanist was available.

The title of the folk song used as the basis of the six short variations, has the approximate meaning "Mother dear, find me a wife whilst I am young"!

The titles of the variations are the sort of words of which few people carry the meaning in their heads, but are fun to discover in a dictionary. They hint at the structure or at the character of the variation to which each relates.
