Ian Keith Harris

This work is an aquarelle of winter rainsqualls for oboe d’amore (oboe) and piano. I have painted the sound picture of driving sheets beating upon my Tasmanian iron roof: of rain driving relentlessly into the windowpanes and slithering down the glass: of the mingling of water with water into foamy rivers. The wind bends the iron-strong eucalyptus; its gusts break off battered leaves from twisting branches. The expressions of havoc and hurry permeate everything in the fury of the elements.

‘West of the Winter Wind’ was composed in May 2006, and is dedicated to Jennifer Paull.
