Ian Keith Harris
Australian composer and oboist Ian Harris was born in Melbourne in 1935, living there for the first 26 years of his life. He moved to Hobart, Tasmania, in 1961 and later to Wellington, New Zealand (1965-1974). During these years he performed upon oboe and cor anglais with various major symphony orchestras whilst tutoring at the Universities of Tasmania, Melbourne, and the Victoria University of Wellington. It was at the latter that he completed his degree in composition. Returning to Tasmania, he embraced a new career as a music educator, taking early retirement to nurse his wife in 1997. He moved to Sydney in 2000, where he now lives with his married daughter, stepdaughter, ten cats and three dogs (but finds time to compose between preparing the meals for most of the above). Since the death of his wife, Ian Harris has given his full attention to musical composition, in which direction Jennifer Paull has encouraged him. Much of his work has been written for her, as he is also a passionate enthusiast of the oboe d’amore.
