Jeffrey Rathbun
Jeffrey Rathbun was appointed to the position of Assistant Principal Oboist of the Cleveland Orchestra in 1990. Prior to his current position he was associated with the Atlanta, San Francisco, Oakland, and Honolulu Symphony Orchestras. As an award-winning soloist, Mr. Rathbun's many honors include first prize at the 1988 Lucarelli International Competition for Solo Oboe Players held in New York City. He made his Carnegie Hall recital debut at the Weill Recital Hall in the spring of 1990. Mr. Rathbun has also been featured as a concerto soloist with the Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, the Oakland Symphony, the Oakland Philharmonia, and the Abilene Philharmonic.
Three Diversions for Two Oboes had its New York premiere in April of 1990 and the first movement of his Oboe Concerto was premiered by the Atlanta Symphony in November, 1989. The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Christoph von Dohnanyi, gave the world premiere of Daredevil in September, 1995. More recent compositions include Aspiration (for soprano, oboe, and piano) for the Plymouth Trio, funded by a grant from the International Double-Reed Society. Franz Welser-Möst conducted the Ensemble Opera Nova in the European premiere of Two Episodes for Chamber Ensemble in July, 1996. This work was also performed by the Ohio Chamber Orchestra later the same year.
